Former White House Physician Endorses Dave Roberts

The retired Rear Admiral Connie Mariano, M.D., announced her support this week.

Editor’s Note: Solana Beach Deputy Mayor is running for County Supervisor of the Third District, an area that includes Encinitas. The campaign group Dave Roberts for Supervisor 2012 released the following announcement on Feb. 23. 

Rear Admiral (retired) Connie Mariano, M.D., former White House Physician to Presidents George H. W. Bush, William J. Clinton, and George W. Bush announced her endorsement this week of Solana Beach Deputy Mayor Dave Roberts for Third District County Supervisor.

"Dave Roberts is a compassionate leader who works in a bipartisan fashion to improve conditions for all," said former White House Physician Mariano.  "I have lived in San Diego County and have family in San Diego County and know that Dave will work with both Republican and Democratic leaders to solve real problems.  His skills serving the military and veterans' communities will be an asset to the San Diego County Board of Supervisors."

Dr. Connie Mariano was born in Sangley Point, Philippines, the eldest daughter of a career Navy enlisted serviceman and his wife, a dentist. Dr. Mariano graduated as Valedictorian from Mar Vista High School in Imperial Beach in 1973.  She received her Bachelor's degree with honors from Revelle College at the University of California at San Diego in 1977.  In 1981, Dr. Mariano received her Medical Degree from the Uniformed Services University of Medicine in Bethesda, Maryland, the nation's military medical school. 

Dr. Mariano completed her internship and residency in Internal Medicine at the Naval Hospital in San Diego.  In June 1992, Dr. Mariano became the first military woman in American history to be appointed White House Physician.  In 1994, Dr. Mariano was named Director of the White House Medical Unit and chosen by President William Clinton to serve as his personal physician.  Dr. Mariano served nine years at the White House where she was physician to three sitting American Presidents.

Rear Admiral Connie Mariano received her promotion at a White House ceremony in 2000 and became the highest-ranking Filipina officer in naval history.  She retired after twenty-four years of active duty service in the Navy in 2001.

"Dr. Mariano is an inspirational leader who has broken through glass ceilings by demonstrating that hard work and determination can get you to the top," Roberts said. "I am honored to add Dr. Mariano's name to my growing list of local and national bipartisan leaders who believe I have the right experience to be the next Third District County Supervisor." 

Dave Roberts is a two-term councilmember and Deputy Mayor of the City of Solana Beach.  He has adopted five children from the county ranging in ages from three to sixteen and has lived in San Diego County for nearly two decades.
