North County Transit Replacing Crossties on COASTER Route

Workers will use heavy machinery to replace the crossties, resulting in noise in the project area from 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. through Nov. 24.

Working at night to avoid disrupting train schedules, North County Transit will replace some 9,800 aging railroad crossties on the COASTER route from the San Diego County line to Sea World Drive. 

Crossties are the timbers that are placed beneath rails. There are typically 3,249 per mile in the United States.

Workers will use heavy machinery to replace the crossties, resulting in noise in the project area from 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. The project kicked off Oct. 7 and will continue through Nov. 24.

North County Transit said the project is part of normal railroad maintenance, which includes periodically replacing aging ties before the they fail to keep the rails property aligned.
