Op-Ed: Don't Be Fooled by Deceptive Slate Mailers

Read the fine print if you really want to know who’s behind that literature, suggests Encinitas City Councilwoman Teresa Barth.

Dear Editor,

By now your mailbox has already been flooded with campaign literature. Mixed in with the glossy flyers are slate mailers.

Slate mailers are for-profit statewide businesses with no official association with political parties or interest groups. They are regulated by the California Fair Political Practices Commission and must disclose payments made and received in connection with the production of slate mailers.

These businesses operate under trustworthy sounding names such as Voter Education Group, California Public Safety, COPS Voter Guide, Save Prop 13, Democratic Voters Choice, Continuing the Republican Revolution, Budget Watchdog, California Vote Green or Woman’s Voice.

The names are chosen specifically to imply affiliation with an endorsement by established organizations. A number of slate mailer companies use the same return address. California Voter Guide and Budget Watchdog use the same Torrance address. Save Prop 13, California Public Safety and Woman’s Voice use the same address in Laguna Niguel.

Legitimate political parties and organizations do send out slate mailers. The candidates listed on these mailers are vetted through an interview process and have earned the endorsement.

So how do you tell the difference? Like everything else, read the fine print. In the smallest print size allowed, you will see a disclaimer statement that reads: “Appearance is paid for and authorized by each candidate and ballot measure which is designated by an *” (asterisk). Those candidates without an asterisk didn’t pay to be listed and probably didn’t even authorize the use of their name and photo. They were included to give the mailer a look of legitimacy.

Slate mailer companies are also used by various individuals to send out last minute "hit pieces" on candidates. By using a slate mailer the actual contributors can remain unknown until after the election when the contribution reports are filed with the FPPC. These companies also provide a means for contributors to, legally and illegally, circumvent local campaign contribution limits.

In the 2010 election, the Voter Education Group sent out a mailer endorsing candidates Kristin Gaspar and Dan Dalager and blasting me. The group was later fined more than $110,000 by the FPPC for various financial reporting violations.

It’s not illegal to pay for a slate mailer endorsement, but is it ethical?

Don’t be fooled. Do what I do...toss them in the recycle bin.

Thank you,

—Teresa Barth, Encinitas City Councilwoman

Just a short thought to get the word out quickly about anything in your neighborhood.
Share something with your neighbors. Write a new post... What's up? Make an announcement, speak your mind, or sell something

Hi Edward, I didn't hear any reports on the scanner or from sources of crashes, rescues or hardRead More landings.

The public deserves an objective, unemotional, factual public debate on this proposition. So far IRead More am still leaning toward a yes vote, but I am keeping an open mind at least through this month.

'Jac', If you decide to actually argue the ERA, instead of denigrating "Republican's" asRead More bogeyman in your canard... please feel free to reprint part of my original reply for argumentum you wish to kite. In the new Patch, my quiet protest to the new site is not respecting continuity as I did before... by deletion whenever I choose. It is my hope, you get updates to your musings and you are fast enough to cut 'n paste to form a cogent reply. Get ready 'jac'... my kind and in-depth explanation, why you are narrow in your non-thinking view - will be gone soon... but have some confidence, your narrow view regarding "Republican's" will remain.

'Batman' already mentioned the main inequality; Women have the grand privilege of choice for bearingRead More children. No matter how bad a man wants to become a father, it's up to some woman to decide to provide a child for him. Traditionally in our society, men are obligated to pay for dating and are expected to afford to provide for the family as women seek this economic stability in men, and will often dismiss a lesser paid man as a potential mate. Perhaps when most women are paying for everything or contributing equally while first dating, and continued into the relationship or when raising a family after marriage, then economic equalities will become more important.

Of course women don't have the same standing as men, they don't have the same hardware either. ButRead More they do have considerably more responsibility in our society. They are the ones who have the responsibilty and the honor of bringing new life into the world. And caring for and nurturing the babies and small children. Men can't do this, no matter how hard they try to act like women. Can you imagine a fella giving birth? Believe me, a fella couldn't take it. Can you imagine a fella breast feeding a baby? You have got to be kidding! Can you just imagine the jacked-up mess we'd be in if men had to do all this by themselves? We'd be extinct by now that's for sure!

Well said, Nama. I was speechless to see how many people Uncle Ben had influenced during his life,Read More but it's no wonder. There may be one less Ben Taylor in our lives, but Heaven just got a whole lot more fun!

Thanks, Kyle for posting this. I'm not sure how things were in the past, but as a Patch editor, I'veRead More seen that blogging and engaging readers directly is a great way to market a book. Steve Repak, a financial planner with a military-themed personal finance book, blogs regularly on Patch and has recently been featured in National Media.
