OPINION: Union's Pro-Nuke Plant Cheers Just for Show

The hundreds of San Diego union members who packed a public meeting to support the reopening of the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station were actors in political theater.

I attended the Feb. 12 Nuclear Regulatory Commission (come to Jesus) meeting at Capo Beach Church where officials came to discuss with the public the "yays" and "nays" of restarting the dangerous 'ol San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station.

I sat in a row of "labor" reps, all in orange t-shirts from the Laborers International Union of North America. They arrived in six busloads to react on cue. Few had worked at the plant.

I remember being at a very heated Toll Road meeting in San Diego County a few years ago. Hundreds of citizens were there, on a work day, to show their dislike for the toll road; many carried signs that read "STOP The TOLL ROAD". Along with many other San Clemente small business owners, I closed my office for the day to rally along with them. I was curious why anyone would support the toll road, so I tried to find a supporter in the crowd. What I found was that the supporters FOR the toll road were all paid union workers (other than the people who stood to financially gain from the toll road). I asked one man there, jokingly, "how much did you get paid to wear your 'support the toll road' tee?" He said "$15 an hour."

We need to get unit 2 back online at 70% - it is not damaged, they need to see what is going on in real time ... if they don't get this figured out we will have rolling blackouts ...
