The number of dog attacks on letter carriers increased last year, earning San Diego County the #2 spot in the nation, according to the U.S. Postal Service.

Last year, the Postal Service reported 101 attacks in San Diego County. A year earlier, it had 75.

A total of 41 communities had reported attacks on letter carriers, including Encinitas with two.

El Cajon, Escondido, Pacific Beach and Santee each had four attacks. And  the highest number of incidents occurred in City Heights neighborhood of San Diego, Encanto and Grantville—each with five reported dog attacks, according to data released to Patch.

"Surprisingly, letter carriers are only the third most likely group to experience a dog bite. Children and the elderly rank first and second respectively. In fact, children are 900 times more likely to be bitten than letter carriers," the Postal Service said in a recent report.
