Encinitas School Bus Driver Competing in International Safety Competition

The three-time state champ is vying for the big win this weekend.

When your kids board that school bus, you hope they’re in good hands—and if Antonio Perez is at the wheel, you can rest assured they are.

Perez has spent the past decade driving buses for the San Dieguito Union High School District, and he’s earned a reputation as one of the best in industry. And he’ll soon have the chance to showoff some of those skills.

LA Times today reported that Perez will be among a handful in the sate competing in the 42nd annual School Bus Driver International Safety Competition in Milwaukee, slated for this weekend.

During the competition, he and other drivers from across the US and Canada will have to demonstrate their knowledge via written exams and driving demos that showcase precision and safety—kind of like the opposite of race and stunt driving.

This, however, isn’t Perez’s first rodeo. He’s already earned a spot as a perennial all-star in California’s regional competitions—and he’s the first to claim three state championships, including this year's title.
