EUSD Plants the Seeds for Farm and Education Center

School board approves proposal for the vacant Encinitas Ranch site.

The Encinitas Union School District’s vision for an education center and organic farm on its Encinitas Ranch property moved another step forward when the board of trustees approved during its April 17 meeting.

Scott A. Murray, an organic farmer and leader of Slow Food San Diego, originally presented a conceptual proposal for the site last fall. The vacant 10-acre site off Quail Gardens Drive would offer students opportunities for hands-on educational activities at the farm and learning stations. The farm’s produce could be used for school lunches, or sold at a stand on site or to partners in the community.

Originally meant to house a school site, the property is being developed so the district doesn’t have to pay a fine for not using it. The development of the property is being funded by money from Proposition P, which was approved by voters in 2010; the measure also funds technology and school site improvements.

The board’s action gives Superintendent Tim Baird the go-ahead to begin negotiations with Scott Murray Farms, as well as the opportunity to enter into a licensing agreement if Murray wants to start cultivating the land before negotiations are finished. There will be a display of the proposal at the Encinitas Garden Festival & Tour on April 21.

Also at the board meeting, the district’s Teachers of the Year and Classified Employees of the Year were honored:

Hi Edward, I didn't hear any reports on the scanner or from sources of crashes, rescues or hardRead More landings.

The public deserves an objective, unemotional, factual public debate on this proposition. So far IRead More am still leaning toward a yes vote, but I am keeping an open mind at least through this month.

That may very well have been part of it. Grandma had an affinity for liquor as well, but grandpaRead More hated alcohol with a passion and wouldn't allow a single drop of it in the house. Sometimes the man's leadership is essential.

Aunt Judy was probably a very lonely person and turned to comfort in a bottle. What a darn shame.

And you know what ladies, if you don't like Batman's way you don't have to do it Batman's way. ThisRead More is America, not Batmerica, and it's not Flanderstan either. My grandmother's sister decided to become a career woman instead of geting married and having a family. She started and ran a very successful accounting business, back in the 1930s! So who needs Flanders and his women's lib? There's nothing standing in your way, there never has been. Flanders and the rest are lying to you. Aunt Judy did become an alcoholic though and died rather young because of it. Would that have been different if she had been a family woman? Nobody knows.

Well said, Nama. I was speechless to see how many people Uncle Ben had influenced during his life,Read More but it's no wonder. There may be one less Ben Taylor in our lives, but Heaven just got a whole lot more fun!

Thanks, Kyle for posting this. I'm not sure how things were in the past, but as a Patch editor, I'veRead More seen that blogging and engaging readers directly is a great way to market a book. Steve Repak, a financial planner with a military-themed personal finance book, blogs regularly on Patch and has recently been featured in National Media.
