School Scoop

What's going on around local campuses.

On Aug. 15, campuses kicked off the school year, with private and public schools following suit over the next couple of weeks. As school gets back in session, Encinitas Patch is introducing its School Scoop column of news and notes from campuses throughout Encinitas. We’ll list upcoming events, school district news, noteworthy student and faculty achievement, and much more. Send your school news to Anastacia Grenda at aegrenda@gmail.com.

  • Some of the Encinitas Union School District’s Prop P money for technology has been used to purchase Macbook laptops for teachers and iPad2 tablets for third through sixth graders. A draft of the rules governing the use of that technology was presented to the Encinitas Union School Board at its Aug. 16 meeting. According to the draft, the computers and tablets are district property and teachers and students/parents must sign contracts adhering to the rules to use the technology. Teachers must observe copyright and trademark rules, and students cannot cyber bully or send anything obscene or defamatory, among other guidelines. The district’s network administrators can review digitally stored files and communications belonging to teachers and students to ensure proper use. The draft states that if a student violates the agreement they will be banned from using the iPad2 and may face possible disciplinary action. Students will have assigned usernames and passwords to get on the district network, and any inappropriate activity will be recorded and sent to the principal, according to the document. While the devices must be kept on campus during school hours, they can be taken home to complete work off campus, the draft states.
  • Park Dale Lane Elementary welcomes new and returning families with a pancake breakfast Aug. 20. The school’s Parent Teacher Association hosts the event in conjunction with the Encinitas Firefighters Association.
  • The board will consider naming the La Costa Canyon fitness center after Jeff Krstich during its Aug. 18 meeting. The high school’s foundation proposed naming the new facility after Krstich, a local football and lacrosse coach who passed away in 2008. His family was active in raising money for the fitness center; 90 percent of the project’s private funding was given in his name.
  • The year kicks off for the on Aug. 29, but locals can still enjoy the summer’s free Friday movie nights. The next one takes place Sept. 2 at sunset at Cardiff Town Center, 2031 San Elijo Ave. cardiffschools.com.
