Cavemen, bumble bees and superheroes were just some of the costumed characters running in the 2013 Cardiff Kook Run Sunday—hours before the Baltimore Ravens and the San Francisco 49ers kicked off the Super Bowl.
"We've got a lot of new costumes and a lot of serious entries," organizer Steve Lebherz said.

More than 2,400 runners—many of them in costumes—ran the 5 and 10-kilometer routes, he added. Seven Encinitas residents placed first in their categories.
In its second year, the run is raising money to improve the area around the Magic Carpet Ride statue—better known as the Cardiff Kook. Various improvements have been made from last year's funds and this year, organizers plan to use the money for landscaping and to make a stroller-friendly ramp from Coast Highway to Cardiff State Beach.

Race officials released the results Sunday evening:
Men's 10k: Ben Bruce of Flagstaff, Arizona - 30:31.8, new Kook Record. He placed 5th place at olympic trials
Women's 10k: Claire Rethmeier of San Marcos - 35:09.6, new Kook record. Known as "local running hero."

Individual: Captain Kook
10k Winners received $200 cash, $50 extra for setting a record, $120 Gift Card to Road Runner, original print by Donald Miralle, World Press Tour Sports Photography and Gift Cards to Running Skirts in Encinitas.

- 19 to 34 Male 10k: Daniel Seidel of Encinitas - 32:33
- 45 to 49 Male: Jeff Creighton of Encinitas - 35:31
- 55 to 59 Male: Chuck Wright of Cardiff - 43:54
- 70 to 99 Male: Jim Moore of Cardiff - 1:03:49
- 45 to 49 Female: Laura Stuart - 39:32
- 55 to 59 Female: Anita Pilkington - 52:29
- 65 to 69 Female: Patty Mccook, of Encinitas - 1:00:02
