Encinitas Teen Wins National Surfing Competition

Taylor Clark, 17, won the National Scholastic Surfing Association National Championship, just weeks after also winning the Surfing America USA title.

One of the best amateur surfers in the world is proud to call Encinitas home.

Last week, Taylor Clark, 17, won the Open Mens division of the National Scholastic Surfing Association (NSSA) National Championship in Huntington Beach, finishing almost a full point ahead of the second place surfer.

Clark used a variety of aerial maneuvers to impress the judges, according to SurferToday.com, en route to his second major surfing title in less than a month. In June Clark also won the Surfing America USA title, which was held at Lower Trestles.

"I've been making it through my heats, but that's all I've been doing. Once I was in the final I was gonna go for it – no more just making my heat," Clark told the website. "When I did that one air I was super stoked to land it. That kind of made me relax a bit."

Jake Marshall, also of Encinitas, finished 4th in the Open Mens Division.
