Joggers and walkers got the rare chance to hit the pavement of S. Coast Highway 101 Sunday morning during the Cardiff Kook Run, a combined 5K and 10K race through Encinitas.
Named after the famed statue with an ever-changing wardrobe, the event featured around 2,000 entrants that were up bright and early on Super Sunday 2012, many in costume and more than a few pushing baby strollers.
Both races started and finished on Third Street just south of C Street near . The course turned east on D Street and continued southbound on Second Street through J Street, and then southbound on S. Coast Highway 101. The 10K turnaround was about a half mile south of in Cardiff.
This was the first year for the Cardiff Kook Run, and founders Steve Lebherz and Seth Brewer intend to make it an annual tradition on Super Sunday.
Lebherz said the proceeds from the race will benefit physical education programs at and to maintain the area surrounding the Cardiff Kook statue.
The 10K first place went to Nazario Romero, who finished with a 31:21.5. Close behind was Lief Anderson at 31:25.8, and Okwaru Rura at 31:42.9.
Tony Herr placed first in the 5K at 16:02.6. Second place went to David Easa at 16:21.2, and third place went to Sean Fader at 17:16.0.
