LCC Loses Heartbreaker to Westview in CIF Volleyball

Top-seeded Mavericks fall just short in their quest for their fourth straight boys Division I title.

In a back-and-forth match that went down to the wire, Westview High edged top-seeded La Costa Canyon 3-2 on Saturday for the San Diego Section Division I boys volleyball title, depriving the Mavericks a fourth straight championship.

Game scores at Canyon Crest Academy were 25-17, 21-25, 27-25, 15-25 and 15-13.

"We battled then tough," said LCC coach Mark Brubaker said. "We just need to play volleyball from start to finish. We struggled whenn we got the lead in that last game and Westview took advantage."

The Mavericks (23-8) went out to an 11-7 lead in the final game before the Wolverines scored six of the next seven points for a 13-12 lead. LCC tied it at 13 before yielding the game's final two points.

LCC never had a lead in game one and easily won game four by jumping to a 10-1 lead. Game two was close until the Mavs scored five of the final seven points to win by four. The pivotal part of the match came in game three, where neither team led by more than two until LCC moved in fron 17-14.

The Mavs would lead 23-20 and 24-21, but Westview (33-4) then scored six of the final seven points for the 27-25 win, including a ball that Westview let fall at 22-24 that officials ruled just out. Had it touched the line, LCC would have taken a 2-1 lead in games.

The La Costa Canyon attack was led byWesty McQueen, who had 21 kills and four blocks. Chris Morris (13 kills),  Eric Ratter (12) and  Luke Bausback (11) also were in double figures.
