Oceanside Back in Title Game After Rout of LCC

The Pirates play tough defense in a 27-7 win to set up a shot at an eighth straight Division II title.

And the beat goes on.

Oceanside High will be playing for an eight straight San Diego Section title on Monday at Qualcomm Stadium after the Pirates shut down host La Costa Canyon 27-7 Thursday night in the Division II semifinals.

And to no one's surprise, Oceanside's opponent in the championship game will be top-seeded Helix, a 21-0 winner over Mission Hills. Four times during their run of seven straight titles, the Pirates have beaten Helix, and they eliminated the Highlanders in the semis last season. Oceanside (9-2-1) or Helix (11-1) have claimed all but one Division II title since 1998.

Against La Costa Canyon (9-3), the Pirates forced turnovers on five straight Maverick possessions in the second and third quarters, helping avenge a 21-16 loss to LCC during the regular season.

Oceanside held a 10-0 lead at the half, allowing the Mavs just 16 yards on 13 plays. Junior fullback William Gulley had 29 carries for 142 yards and two touchdowns for the Pirates.

Defensive linemen Grant Bays and Eduardo Middleton teamed up for a TD, with Bays knocking the ball out of the grasp of LCC quarterback Jake Sesti and Middleton grabbing it in midair and taking it 16 yards for a score.
