The San Diego Chargers are urging fans to leave home early for today's sold-out preseason opener against the Green Bay Packers, whether headed to Qualcomm Stadium by car or trolley.

The stadium parking lot will open at noon for fans with pre-purchased parking permits and 1 p.m. for the general public. It is expected to reach capacity by 4 p.m.

Overflow parking will be available at San Diego State University, the Mission Valley Marriott and Town & Country Hotel.

The Chargers strongly encourage fans to arrive at least two hours before the opening kickoff, which will be shortly after 5 p.m.

Club seat and luxury suite ticket holders will be admitted beginning at 2 p.m. Gates to the stadium will open at 3:30 p.m. In order to be in their seats in time for the opening kickoff, fans should arrive at the stadium gates by 4 p.m.

Fans driving to the game should research alternative routes because most area freeways may be congested. Fans are also encouraged to carpool or take the San Diego Trolley.

The Metropolitan Transit System is recommending that fans taking the trolley plan to travel a minimum of two to three hours before the opening kickoff. Fans traveling after 3:30 p.m. should expect significant delays in boarding as many trains will arrive at some stations filled to capacity.

If a train arrives at a station full, fans should remain patient; trains will continue to cycle as often as possible in order to get fans to Qualcomm Stadium.

Fans are advised not to attempt to board trains that are obviously full. Allowing trains to depart by standing clear of open doors keeps the fleet cycling, allowing the Metropolitan Transit System to serve more passengers over time.

Fans taking the trolley are advised to purchase a $5 day pass before boarding, allowing them to avoid ticket lines after the game. High-volume stations will have a ticket booth open open. All stations have automated ticket vending machines.

Other travel options to the game include the Board Our Bus and Sports Fan Express buses and Amtrak.
