Steele Canyon Knocks LCC Out of Baseball Playoffs
Top-seeded Mavericks held to two hits in 7-0 loss, the second in three days to the Cougars.
The La Costa Canyon High baseball team was one win away from nailing down a berth in the San Diego CIF Division II finals.
That was on Tuesday.
But the Mavericks could not shake upstart Steele Canyon from Rancho San Diego. Top-seeded LCC was dealt back-to-back home losses by the No. 4-seeded Cougars, including 7-0 in Thursday’s elimination game.

Thus, Steele Canyon (20-13) advances to the San Diego Section Division II finals against No. 2 seed Helix (24-9) in a battle of Grossmont South League rivals at SDSU’s Tony Gwynn Stadium.
The Mavericks conclude the season at 26-8.

Steele Canyon jumped on Mavericks starter Andrew Hinkle for five runs in the opening inning and then handed the ball to Michael Cederoth, who proceeded to spin a two-hit shutout. The 6-foot-6 right-hander walked two and struck out seven.
The only hint of offense the Mavericks could muster were a pair of singles by junior catcher Matt Hall.
