Dive-bombing birds in the kelp beds got Calvin Tom's attention yesterday around 10 a.m. As an avid fisherman, he knew that fish that were attracting this bird activity and decided to venture out for a closer look with his paddle board and fishing pole. Sure enough, he caught a 9-foot thresher shark in the kelp beds off Swamis.
Calvin Tom, who owns and operates Boardfisher, a local company that makes gear for fishing from a stand up paddle board, hauled his catch to shore--which weighed about 80 pounds.
Ty Ponder, another avid fisherman also hauled in an unsual catch yesterday. He found a fake shark fin attached to PVC pipe that may have used to scare people out of the crowded line up at Swamis. The fin looks very similar to the fin in the picture that was beamed around the world by the media. The picture of the shark was analyzed by shark experts, many of whom thought it was a great white.
