It is quite clear Sister, that you don't understand the difference between "charity" whichRead More the Catholic Church is and has been a leader in the US and around the world. The church as a whole provides services by the generosity of its church members, NOT by the government, which if I am not mistaken doesn't give the Catholic church much of anything. And if you care to do the research ( I have) the percentage of persons getting some form of government assistance is approaching 50% thanks to unemployment which has gotten much worse under this administration. And if you take the time to look at the numbers, what Paul Ryan has suggested is to reform our current social security system (which those of us who work) pay into all our lives but only for those under the age of 50. The current retirement system was established when average life expectance was barely 60 (which is now 75+) and didn't provide for persons not a part of the legal work force not disability which we all know is "milked" by some for all its worth. Mr Ryan and most intellegent persons know stopping fraud and reform must happen to provide for the future retirees that have not reached the age of 50 yet. And one final word, just where does the donations come from to the church, It not government, it is to a large part the people who make over $250,000 a year and tithe big.

Sorry not true.... Up to about 100K everyone pays payroll tax, around 9%? the employers match theRead More 9% (this can be considered 18% as this is only paid on behalf of a worker and is a part of compensation). People up to 100K pay local taxes, and as the portion of their income for food and necessities is 100% of their pay (vs. a wealthy person who invests the money above their requirement) so while a Warren Buffett or Mitt Romney pay 13-14% (their payroll taxes are inconsequential), the poor guy at Starbucks pays a minimum of 25% in taxes. With property taxes, use taxes, gas taxes, etc. the lower tier of Americans pay a HUGE amount more percentage-wise then wealthy people... But the 3% own the papers, etc. so there you go!

From what I understand, military boot camps use bullying tactics to toughen up new recruits. ShouldRead More they be the exception to the rule that bullying is never ok?

Military boot camps shouldn't be an exception. Bullying isn't ok. Standing up to it, by the oneRead More being bullied, or by those witnessing it, takes courage. Bullying is especially prevalent now, on blogs, where posters can annonymously bully someone they've often never met, causing pain & leading to a rippling effect, often destroying the flow of conversation & ruining the discussion. These flamers are cyberbullies. Here, in Encinitas, many feel our current Mayor, Jerome Stocks, routinely uses bully tactics. He often interrupts public speakers. For certain speakers, if we go ONE MOMENT beyond our alloted three minutes, he begins interrupting repeating over & over, "Time's up." For others, he lets them go on for more than 30 seconds, saying nothing. It's all a matter of whether or not he likes you, or likes what you are saying. For those with whom he disagrees, Stocks fails to give eye contact while we are at the public speaker dais. Encinitas has a long tradition, an unwritten policy, of council & staff's not responding to public speakers' comments for oral communications, except to ask a question or set a future agenda item. But for that part of council meetings which is unagendized, Stocks also has bullied, declaring opinions to be "false,"calling on the city manager to make a lengthy contradiction. Stocks, without Council approval or public notice takes matters off the agenda, makes motions on unagendized actions, disallowing public or Council discussion!

I love the County Library system and am so glad to see them awarded this honor. I remember theRead More Encinitas Library from when it was a small "hole in the wall" on D Street. I don't know what my life would have been like without all the amazing books that libraries have brought me! Libraries are one of our best community resources "in my book."
