Locals Only: Christopher Carter Mayne
Photographer's career flies high with his images of birds.
Christopher Carter Mayne’s career is for the birds. A resident here for 41 years, Mayne is well known for his avian-themed photos. The latest accolade his work has earned: a spot in the 2012 National Audubon Society Awards calendar. Mayne will talk about his photos of local birds during a Sept. 21 event at the Encinitas Library; you can also learn more about him here in Locals Only.
How his work was selected for the calendar: My wife, Carole, kindly sent some images into Audubon and three were chosen for the top 100, with the Grebes chosen for the calendar.
How he got started photographing birds: We have been blessed to be able to travel and my photography started there. When taking pictures of surfing, a bird would fly by and I'd take a few frames of it. After a while it just evolved into avian images.

Favorite part of his work: Easily, just being out in nature. Meeting people and other photographers and going places to find subjects I never would have gone to has been a great added bonus.
Favorite bird native to the area: That would have to be the Osprey. I love the way they fish and the great skills they exhibit.
