Community Corner

Pump Up the YouthJamz

LCC brother and sister team host benefit concerts to help charities.

There are teens who do community service to earn school credit or put it on their college applications. Then there are Noah and Jenna Lizerbram, siblings who have started YouthJamz, a nonprofit club on the La Costa Canyon High School campus and are preparing to host their second concert for charity.

The Feb. 25 concert, which will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. at the high school, has a lineup that includes Tim Urban, Thomas Fiss and Avenue 52. YouthJamz is working with the LCC Associated Student Body and the nonprofit Photocharity to raise money for Storefront Shelter, which assists homeless teens.

“I always love helping people; it’s one of my favorite things to do,” says Noah, a sophomore. “When people tell me how grateful they are, it’s a great feeling. I’m hoping we can inspire other people.”

YouthJamz got its start after Jenna, a freshman, attended a David Archuleta benefit concert for Rising Star Outreach, which helps children living in leper colonies in India. It was so inspiring that Noah and Jenna decided to sponsor a child through Rising Star. They also became interested in another charity, Falling Whistles, which works in the Congo trying to get children out of the army and rehabilitate them. Capitalizing on their interest in music, the siblings decided to throw their own benefit concert for the two nonprofits.

That concert took place in September at the Del Mar Fairgrounds. The concert “went off perfectly” and drew 250 people, Noah says. In December, they received permission to form a YouthJamz club at school, which now has 30 members. They decided to localize their efforts for the upcoming concert, focusing on San Diego-area acts and selecting a local charity. Noah says they also hope the show will be a good advertisement for a summer concert, and that it will inspire students from other local schools to get involved.

“I play drums and my sister is starting piano; our whole family is into the music scene,” Noah says. “That’s what made it mesh: charity, music—it works.”
