El Callejon: Authentic Mexican Cuisine

El Callejon lives up to the hype.

Best chips, best margaritas…best Mexican food I’ve had yet!

I’m new to Encinitas (check out ) as well as new to Patch and there was no hesitation when I decided to write about one of my favorite restaurants so far: El Callejon

Its eccentric décor is what initially drew me in. You’ll feel like you’ve crossed the border even before you enter. You can choose from two bars, as well as outside or inside seating – anywhere you go, the mariachi will find you. Once we settled in, I got down to business and ordered a margarita (skinny) on the rocks. They’re strong, so beware, and delicious! I was actually shocked to learn that they’re all made fairly “skinny” as they don’t use any mixes in their drinks – they have a large selection of tequila’s that decorate the walls and use freshly squeezed lime juice to give it that kick and taste that really do make them the best.

Now, for what really keeps me coming back for more….

If there was an award for best chip I’ve ever had in the world, El Callejon would take it all the way! I can usually control myself around a basket when eating Mexican food; however, that is not the case here – good or bad…you decide! They’re crunchy and always fresh – addicting!

When I was able to pull myself away from the chips, I glanced at the menu and was confused…I couldn’t find the fajitas! Where are they? I must have read every word of that menu thinking that surely they had to be on there somewhere. Amateur, I am. If you are looking for fajitas, fajitas you will not find. This family owned and operated restaurant prides themselves off of serving real authentic Mexican cuisine – many of their dishes are actually old family recipes that that have been passed on for years.

I ended up ordering the ceviche valentin (highly recommend) made with red snapper. It’s prepared in a lemon and herb sauce and comes with a side of crackers which I had to forgo due to my earlier mass consumption of chips. The Guy ordered a combo – two sopas, two enchiladas, and two pollo con mole. All I remember hearing was "best…mole…ever!"

Suffice to say; for the first restaurant that really caught my attention in town, I was incredibly pleased – I have and will continue to go back for more.
